There was another recent update for Movable Type, which is the weblog program that I am using.

Although this was a major update, there were no update issues worth mentioning this time around, and everything went very smoothly.

However, since this is a major update, there are new features that I would like to look into as I get more accustomed to using this version.

For better or for worse, I do most of my posts in my Japanese Blog , and as a result, posts in the English Blog have been next to none this past year.

I would like very much to make more updates on this end, but I would like to make this something different than just random thought on random issues (as is the case with my Japanese Blog).

A while back, there was an update to Movable Type, to version 3.35.

Since I am using the Japanese version, even for my English Blog, I waited for the Japanese update.

There are a few changes from Movable Type 3.34-ja to Movable Type 3.35-ja:

1) Movable Type Enhanced Installation Process

This is when no `mt-config.cgi` file is present, I didn't get to check this out since I am doing an upgrade, which is pretty easy in itself.

2) XSS Vulnerability fix: script injection is allowed in author and email parameter of mt-comment.cgi

I don't know how this will work out, but you have to edit your templates for it to come into effect.

3) Fixed broken help links

Pretty self explainatory.

4) Fixed MTDate tags to display correct timestamp under daylight savings

I was always disturbed by this, since Japan does not have daylight savings. I always wondered what the people in states like Arizona, who also don't have daylight savings, were doing. Upon first glance though, this does not seem to be working...

5) SQLite BerkeleyDB to MySQL migration script fixed

All my files are currently MySQL, so no immediate problem here.

6) 48741: convert-db garble characters sometimes

Same as above.

7) Increased the size of "template_name" column

This may be helpful for me, but I never noted the need for this before.

BTW, all of these can be found at Sixapart:

Another problem with Movable Type and MySQL, this time I had the problem where Japanese Text, Shift-JIS was not encoding properly in my MySQL account.

New files are correctly displayed in Japanese, but all my previous entries and comments are not encoding properly.

I have thought long and hard and searched the internet, but it seems like the easiest thing to do is to just re-upload the entries that I had saved in text format.

of course, I'll have to delete half of my entries afterward....

Since there was so much spam in my Trackback folder, my rental server suspended/disabled the folder where I had my Movable Type files. Upon inquiry, I decided to reupload all MT files into a different directory. I upgraded to version 3.34 in the meantime.

Thanks to MySQL, I was able to update easily. Had my files been Berkeley DB, the /db folder would have been suspended along with the MT directory.

In order to reduce future attacks, I decided to do the following:

1) Delete RDF from the Individual Entry Archive

Just delete the tag <$MTEntryTrackbackData$>and save, rebuild.

2) Rename CGI files

Renamed mt-tb-cgi to mt-tb-somethigelse.cgi, mt-comments.cgi to mt-comments-somethingelse.cgi.

Added the lines

TrackbackScript mt-tb-somethingelse.cgi
CommentsScript mt-comments-somethingelse.cgi

in mt-config.cgi, and rebuild.

We'll see if this has any effect.

It had come to my attention that comments on my Blog were not being accepted.

Wanting to figure out the problem, I tried to logon, but I was unable to logon to my Movable Type account. It gave me a 404 error -- file not found.

It seemed as though mt.cgi was looking for the mt-update.cgi file, which I had deleted after my previous update, version 3.33. So I uploaded said file, but then it told me I could not logon.

I feared for the worst, but could think of a few possible causes:
1) The rental server I use is upgrading
2) The database file (DB) is corrupt
3) Memory overload

So I first checked out the Sixapart Movable Type Knowledge Base.

http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/kb/authors/invalid_login.html

One thing it mentioned was that Berkeley DB database is prone to server upgrades.
http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/kb/databases/converting_berk.html

I couldn't do anything on the server since telnet is not provided, but I was able to login after a while. It seems as though it was a server upgrade.

But I saw this as a good time to change the database file to MySQL. So got a MySQL account from the provider, used a script to change the db files to sql files and was up and running in no time. Since MySQL files can be kept in a different place than the DB files (which are in the same folder as the mt.cgi file), I see this as an advantage.

Just in case there are any more problems in the future, I will try to backup more often...

I went back to Canada on August 3rd, for a 5-day 3-nights-of-sleep trip. Seems insane, since it's the high season and only staying for a few days coming all the way from Japan.

But a good friend and a pseudo-little-brother of mine was getting married to my pseudo-little-sister, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I was honoured by just being invited to their special event, since the marriage is doubly special for me, but I was also asked to be the best man, which made it a triple-special.

So you see, this made it a can't-miss trip for me, even considering the short(time-wise), long(distance-wise) trip there.

The event itself was great, both the ceremony and the reception. I stopped from drinking too much, and I tried to do as much work as possible on-site because I hadn't helped out in the months prior (much more to do, I might add).

There were a few instances where I choked up, and I tried my best to cover it up. Once was during the ceremony, somewhere between the exchange of vows and the rings. The rings became sweaty in my hands as well, part from the nerves and part from the temperature of the chapel.

I tried to be on my best behaviour during the reception, but one thing I hadn't done was rehearse my speech, and it showed. I stumbled over a few words and forgot a few points I wanted to make. That is a huge regret for me, because although this day wasn't about me, it was about two people I really care about.

However, all in all, a great day, and I was glad I could be there.

*As a bonus, I got to meet the firstborn of another pair of good friends of mine. Now I can brag to the kid when he's 20 that I held him in my arms when he was less than a month old.

No, I'm not talking about the World Cup.

A Japanese friend of mine I met in Canada married a Canadian in May, and had a relatively small wedding in her hometown with family members and close friends. I guess that makes sense, you can't invite all of your friends to come to a wedding in a small town on the other side of the world (Although I am going to a wedding in Canada in August).

Anyway, they threw a post-wedding party for their friends in Kyoto, although they were understandibly a bit lob-sided to the bride's side. Well, the party was quite fun, I got to meet a lot of new people, and I hope to hang out with a lot of these people in the future. I tried to talk to as many people that I could, but I ended up talking a lot with the english-speaking population in the room.

I use a lot of english at work, but those are mostly dealings of business, research and development, with university professors and senior engineers. Not what you can call casual conversation, and certainly no joking around or "guy-talk".

I got to do that for the first time in a long time. I forgot what it was like to just "chill" with canadians/americans/british/australian/newzealand people (maybe I should come up with a smooth term to describe the english speaking population). New friends are always fun to make, but this time I think I rediscovered a little bit of my myself as well.

        The World Cup

Sadly, I'm not as excited about the World cup this year as years past. Somehow I have lost interest in international sports confrontations. The Baseball WBC was a pretty big deal in Japan, not only because Japan won. I had little interest in a "World" competition of a sport that doesn't even have a spot in the Olympics. Even the Olympics I had little interest in, with sports such as gymnastics where all credibility was lost with the judges changing the score after the crowd booing the original score.

So back to soccer. Although I am more interested in the World Cup than WBC and the Olympics, most of that has to do with the fact I am a soccer fan. But the quality of soccer in the World Cup always seems 3rd compared to The FIFA Champions League and the EURO tournament. I just cannot get excited with matches between Iran and Angola or Ecuador and Costa Rica.

I understand that Japan vs Australia isn't a very attractive match to non-Japanese/Australians either, and the mentality is to give a little bit to everybody, so the whole world can enjoy the event. The problem with giving a little bit of everything to everybody means that you are also taking everything that's left from everybody else.

        Overall thoughts:

I watched the Hall of Fame 2006 before WrestleMania. We had all the great moments of past names, teases of Hogan vs. Austin at WrestleMania 23, and great memories brought back of Bret Hart and Eddie Guerrero. All on the previous night to the biggest <s>wrestling</s> sports-entertainment show of the year.

However, I was surprised by WrestleMania. Rey Mysterio winning the World Heavyweight Title did not sruprise me, but the length of the match, which was 9 minutes, did. John Cena retaining the World Hvt. Title was also surprising. Others were: Trish Stratus getting booed, Mickey James getting cheered, Rey Mysterio getting booed.

The Triple H vs. John Cena match started with two interesting but corny and unneeded introductions ever. I wish that they would cut those entrances and the pillow fight and 5 minutes of the Boogeyman match and given it to the Smackdown three-way. I remember thinking which match should go on last, but HHH-Cena seems like a logical choice, even if you don't consider that Smackdown is the B-show. This match was pushed harder than any other match (even HBK-Vince in my opinion), was a one-on-one match-up (rather than a three-way). A side-issue for me was how the crowd was going to react to Cena. The finish to me was almost secondary, partly because I thought that HHH was going to win, without question. Come the match, seemed to boo Cena at first, but as the match progressed, the Cena supporters either increased or got louder. Maybe some people even switched sides. The interesting thing for me was that the crowd seemed want to either boo or cheer Cena no matter who was against him, which can be perceived as Cena being The Main Event, and HHH the afterthought. The match was set up well, I enjoyed it more than Batista-HHH from last year, mostly because of the crowd reaction and the match finish, but also the quality of wrestling was better in my eyes. I sometimes wonder why Batista isn't booed out of the building like Cena, since they are relatively similar on the wrestling spectrum in terms of charisma, workrate, etc. But I think Cena is in a unique position right now that no superstar in history has experienced, and that's constantly having a 50/50 crowd. You have two extremes, since the guys boo hard to drown out the cheers, and the women and children cheer to try to drown the boos. One thing WWE is trying to portray is that Cena always finds a way to win through heart and determination, but Cena?fs character is not a dominating super hero type. If he lost from time to time, I would suspect that the girls will love him more for it when he does win, and the guys will be ultra pissed off each time they think they got rid of him in the main event picture. At this point, the guys love to boo him because they're not supposed to, so if you give a reason for them to boo Cena, you'll lose this 50/50 heat (in my opinion, of course). But think about it, last year at WrestleMania 21, vs. JBL, there was no debate that HHH vs Batista would be the last match, when you compared the two matches. This year, he was and belonged in the main event. Cena's version of the STF (Stepover Toehold Facelock), the STFU, probably stands for "Shut The F**k Up".

I enjoyed the 10 minutes of action that Angle-Rey-Orton provided, but that more made it all the more disappointing. The crowd booing Mysterio is interesting, and I can understand that to an extent. Randy was right, Rey had become a charity case. He lost his Royal Rumble win clause to Randy and was placed in the main event by idiot GM Teddy Long, and I think the fans saw through that. I wouldn't go out to boo the guy though. There would have been better ways to get Randy into the event without neutering Rey, but things like this makes me think that Rey's involvement and subsequent title win could have been decided on the last minute. If they were 100% sure about Rey winning the World Title at Mania, they wouldn't have mede him lose the shot at No Way Out. In the end, there were a lot of people cheering when Rey won, so I don't know how much I should look into the fact that he got booed. I really think that they loved Angle that much more.

Besides the two world title matches, there were a few other matches that stood out in my eyes going into the event: Vince McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels, Edge vs. Mick Foley and Trish Stratus vs. Mickey James. Vince vs. Shawn had equal or sometimes more build-up and than Cena-Hunter at times, so there was a lot of curiosity for me. Would Vince be able to move? Will HBK get to steal the show? Will HBK get a good match out of Vince? How many people will run in (not Bret)? Edge vs. Foley had mediocre hype that deserved more, but around and after Saturday Night's Main Event things started to pick up. Foley was the only returning top star of the event (except for Ross, but you know what I mean). The slow and excellent build-up to Trish vs. Mickey made it one of the most anticipated Women's Title match in WretleMania, nay, WWE history.

Vince and Shawn's match was probably given a lot of attention, and it showed. I think that this is one of the matches that probably had a lot of input from the creative team and wrestlers. The match protected McMahon physically, since he is probably much much more brittle than Hunter or Batista due to his age and muscle mass, and any muscle of his could tear off by the tendons. It was a strict beat-down from the beginning, and Vince only got the upper hand when the spirit squad or Shane interfered. As much I as don't like Hogan (Since about 1990 - after WMVI), it was inconceivable at WM19 that Vince could stand toe-to-toe with the Icon of the 80s. Michaels retained his credibility since he made it clear that he could have beaten Vince at any time during the match, so he has an excuse when people say he took 18 minutes to defeat a 60 year old non-wrestler. Shane McMahon's interference teased a screwball Vince win, but it ended up being only the mid-point with lots of excitement afterwards and up until the end of the match. Shane McMahon was great after being handcuffed (and Vince kiss ass spot is stolen from Chavo Jr. and Eddie from Smackdown!). After being Of course, the wrestling world would be great if all the matches and feuds got this much attention and thought put into them...

Mick Foley was Mick Foley, and realistically this was the only kind of match that would have made his fans happy. Edge looked like a big star, on par with or moreso than Foley. For me, the most memorable moment of the match (and maybe the whole show) was Edge diving through the ropes, spearing Foley off the ring apron and through a table that Lita had set on fire. I think this match proved something I've been saying before, which is that Edge can be a long-term main eventer, and his charisma, athletic ability, move execution, psychology are all above that of HHH in 2006.

The Women's Title match wasn't as memorable as the hype leading up to it, but the bigger story is the crowd reaction, cheering psycho Mickey James and booing Trish. I don't think there was a bigger reation to a women's match in some time, or maybe ever. I think some of this had to do with Trish's 15 month title reign, and her lack of presence in the storyline. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great that Trish played the layed-back character during the storyline, of a person that doesn't know how to deal with an ultra-fan. Since Mickey was the focus, I'm just saying it could have been a reason that Trish got booed. However, the main reason in my mind for the Mickey cheers is because she played her part so well, and I (along with the many in Chicago) appreciate <s>lesbians</s> a good performance. That's why I'm very forgiving of that botched Stratusfaction finish at the end. It almost seemed they ad-libbed the Mick-Kick version finish, but to me it was alright.

As far as the Money in the Bank match goes, RVD may have won it, but Shelton Benjamin stole the spotlight with two amazing athletic moves, 1) running up the ladder (that was laying on the ropes) and flipping to the outside, 2) jumping on the ropes from the apron (a la Rey Mysterio's West Coast Pop) and onto a ladder in the middle of the ring. That second jump was so smooth and spot-on it was amazing. If you threw a 250 lbs object on a standing ladder it would surely fall over. It was too bad that one wasn't completely caught by the main camera.

I'm mixed on how I feel about JR. He was great on commentary, put Styles over, and made it -- well, WrestleMania. I would really like to have Ross back on RAW, but I think he deserves the rest, and it is always important to try to develop the next generation. I also think that much like Flair, Ross should be used as a special attraction because of his importance (However, a WWE announcer's job is to sell the PPV, so Ross' announcing is best served on RAW -- please pardon the contradiction).

Other results in quick-format:

Kane & Big Show beat Chris Masters & Carlito: I thought Masters and Carly would make a good couple-that-fights tag team champions.

Coach interviewed Shawn Michaels backstage. Only time we see Coach, so I'm happy.

Rob Van Dam beat Ric Flair, Shelton Benjamin, Bobby Lashley, Fit Finlay, and Matt Hardy.

Josh Matthews interviewed Gene Okerlund about the Hall of Fame. Randy Orton interrupted Gene, Big Dave Batista interrupts Randy.

Howard Finkle introduced the Hall of Fame class of 2006. Vicki and Chavo Jr. walked out on behalf of Eddie Guerrero. Fink said Bret Hart "was not comfortable" being at WrestleMania. People booed.

JBL (w/Jillian Hall) beat Chris Benoit. Two past main eventers at Mania. Sad.

Edge (w/Lita) beat Mick Foley in a Hardcore match.

Sharmell and Booker backstage. Paul Burchill, Eugene, Ted DiBiase, Snitsky, Mae Young, Moolah, Goldust all made an appearance.

Boogeyman beat Booker T & Sharmell: This was a five minute match that went six minutes too long.

Mickie James beat Trish Stratus to win the Women's Title.

Vince McMahon and family (Linda, Stephanie, and Shane -- no HHH) backstage. Vince is so tanned he looks orange. Vince makes everyone pray as Steph tries not to laugh. He did a speech about how God doesn't like him and he doesn't like God. Oh boy.

Undertaker beat Mark Henry in a Casket match. Taker is 14-0. Maybe it was the low expectation, but this was a good match. Undertaker couled have winged it but he gave it his all. No mid-40-ish person I know can leap over a top rope from the ring past a casket to the floor.

Shawn Michaels beat Vince McMahon in No Holds Barred match: I still don't know the difference between a Hardcore match and No holds barred. Shane gets shoved into Vince's ass. HBK does some DX chops, delivers a top rope elbow drop through the table on McMahon wearing a trash can.

Rey Mysterio beat Randy Orton and Kurt Angle to win the Big Gold Belt: P.O.D. played Rey's music. Rey was wearing an Azteca outfit.

Torrie Wilson beat Candice Michelle in a Pillow Fight: No Stacy, no Melina, but we get these two. Blah.

John Cena beat HHH to retain the Spinning Belt: Hunter was dressed like Conan the Barbarian and sitting in a fake throne for his entrance. The bottle of water in his hand looked out of place. Cena was dressed in a trench coat and shot a fake machine gun. C.M. Punk was one of the gangsters on the side. Hunter did a DX chop too, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Triple H vs. John Cena: I have the Bad match-Good match raito for this one to be 7:3. I still think HHH is pretty good at guiding the match. The problem is when lots of people cheer when H is on offense, and boo when Cena is on offense. Prediction: WM18-HHH over Jericho, WM19-HHH over Booker T, WM20-Benoit over HHH (and HBK), WM21-Batista over HHH. Since it's 2-2, I say HHH wins this year.

Vince McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels: This isn't Austin-McMahon or Hogan-McMahon... or Hart-McMahon. That last one would be insane. I will go on record saying that this will NOT happen, but if Bret Hart comes to the ring mid-match and gives a chair shot to both Vince and Shawn, that would cause an insane pop. Otherwise, I still think this is a waste of Shawn Michaels. I hate fanatasy booking, but it would have been cool if HBK stayed heel from SummerSlam, and faced off someone at Mania as a bad guy. Prediction: HBK gets his revenge.

Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton vs. Rey Mysterio: Angle just lost to Mark Henry at Smackdown. With WWE holding back on the Eddie Guerrero exploitation, Rey doesn't have much steam either, and being thrown into the Main Event onthe whim of the GM doesn't help. It would be nice to see Randy be chased by several opponents as champion. 2005 was mostly babyface Cena and babyface Batista being chased by heels. 2004 was mostly heel JBL and heel HHH being chased. Maybe it would be good to have Rey being chased as a babyface and HHH on RAW? Anyway, this year is probably the bset year for Rey to get the title and dedicate it to Eddie. I would like to see all of Eddie's (and Rey's) friends and family go to the ring and celebrate at the end of the PPV. Prediction: Rey, and have Orton as a contender until summertime or so.

Edge vs. Mick Foley: This seems like such a throwaway match, and it deserved more buildup. Nevermind the fact that Edge was pushed down since he did better than HHH, and Mick is being treated as a novelty act as punishment. Still, they could pull off an exciting few hardcore spots. Prediction: Edge if WWE creative still wants to punish Foley for almost signing with TNA. Foley if WWE creative still wants to punish Edge for doing better as the main event heel than HHH.

Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James: I would like to see psycho Mickie take control of most of the match. Prediction: Trish gets beat for most of the match, but makes a comeback. Maybe a rematch later?

Money in the Bank ladder match: Last year, Shelton Benjamin was IC champ and didn't win the Money in the Bank. This year, Shelton Benjamin is IC champ and he isn't going to win the Money in the Bank. Other people involved are RVD, Ric Flair, Matt Hardy, Fit Finlay, and Bobby Lashley. RVD, Shelton, and Matt Hardy will do most of the high-spots, but that doesn't mean that the others will make it boring. With six people, it doesn't matter too much if a few people are on the ground (Finlay and Lashey). I hope Ric Flair doesn't get hurt. Prediction: Ric Flair wins, beats HHH and holds the title for a month and gives it back.

Undertaker vs. Mark Henry: No-brainer. I think Taker losing his last WmrestleMania will mean a lot. Not against Henry though. Prediction: Undertaker 14-0.

Chris Benoit vs. JBL. Not too much build-up for this one. Prediction: JBL.

Boogeyman vs. Booker T. Please keep this one short. Prediction: Boogeyman worms Sharmell.

Candice Michelle vs. Torrie Wilson pillow fight: Blah. 20 years ago, getting pictures of unclothed women was hard. In this day and age, you just need to go on the internet. Candice is on there from previous stuff shedid. Prediction: I don't care.

I watched Saturday Night's Main Event (SNME), since it was on NBC, and we watched it regularly, even though it was on a every few months or so. It was funny how we, even as kids, could keep up with the storylines that unveiled then, but now, as adults, I sometimes forget what happened the week before on WWE TV. Back when the only PPV was WrestleMania, until 1987 or so, they had TV only a handfull of times the entire year to set up the one PPV. Monday night RAW started in 1993. For the people that experienced it, Saturday Night's Main Event was like Raw, Smackdown and say a PPV like No Mercy or Vengeance all rolled into one. The first SNME started right after the first WrestleMania (1985), I remember not watching WrestleMania, and I think the first SNME I saw was the third one on October 31, 1985. I remember this one because of Hulk Hogan & Andre the Giant beating King Kong Bundy & John Studd, and Ricky Steamboat pinning Mr. Fuji.

The more memorable SNME for me was on March 1, 1986 which was the set-up to WrestleMania II. World Champ Hulk Hogan beat Don Muraco via DQ. This DQ was a Bobby Heenan and King Kong Bundy run-in. Don Muraco held onto Hogan's by his arms in the corner while Bundy avalanched him. He had taped ribs and all at WrestleMania. There was also a great match with The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine) vs The British Bulldogs. Dynamite Kid was great. To go on a tagent, the original Tiger Mask was huge in Japan at the time, but whenever I watched those matches I was always rooting for Dynamite Kid, the heel. I never knew better. Well, after WrestleMania II (which I didn't watch... I watched a lot of PPVs on video, but I think the first PPV I watched live on TV was Survivor Series 1998, the one with the title tournament where The Rock turned and beat Mankind with the Sharpshooter) the shocking event on SNME was on May 1, 1986. I only remember one thing from this event. Jake Roberts giving Ricky Steamboat a DDT on the concrete on the outside. The match didn't even start. I was so scared by Jake and I was legit worried about Steamboat. I later found out on the recent Jake Roberts DVD that Steamboat was legit knocked out and had a huge lump on the side of his head.

By this time the SNME was airing semi-regularly at about one show a month, Paul Orndorff had turned on Hogan and Randy Savage beat Tito Santana with a foreign object deep in his tights (I remember Randy going WAY down there to get the thing, my dad and brother and I were laughing at that). December 14, 1986 was the big cage match in the fake blue cage with Hulk Hogan vs Paul Orndorff. This was the one where Orndorff and Hogan landed outside at the same time. They replayed and rewound the tape on a split-screen. I thought for sure that it was going to go on a bit longer with Orndorff, but things quickly switched to Hogan vs Andre. On SNME, they had the big battle royal where Andre threw out Hogan like a sack of potatoes. This was the lead-in to WrestleMania III.

In the autumn of 1987, Randy Savage turned good guy against the Honkytonk Man. But then something weird happened. SNME went on Friday night in February 1988, now simply called "The Main Event". This is where Andre the Giant pinned Hulk Hogan to win the WWF World Title. Yep, you read that right. I wonder if that is aknowledged in the WWE history books.

http://www.wwe.com/inside/titlehistory/

Well whaddya know, it is! Well, Andre was hired by Ted DiBiase and he gave him the belt. DiBiase looked so happy. Fake WWF president Jack Tunney stripped Ted of the title since he did't beat anybody, stripped Andre of the title as a penalty for giving the title away, and didn't give it back to Hogan because, well, he lost. This lead to WrestleMania IV, the big tournament one where Ted fought once and Randy had four matches and won. I really think DiBiase would have been a great heel champion a la Ric Flair in the NWA, but WWF at the time was about good guys being champions. Superstar Billy Graham would have been a champion too, by that theory. Back to SNME, Rick Rude was getting exposure. Jake Roberts vs Rick Rude was a great feud. Ultimate Warrior won the IC title in a few seconds at Summerslam, and he was getting on my TV now. Randy now turns on Hulk (man, this is a pattern... Orndorff, Andre, Savage... it never ends) at this point, and this leads into WrestleMania V. Since SNME had it's last show in 1992, this is about half-way. I'll end my rant here for now.

As Edge and Christian will tell you, since we only got WWF in Canada, I was a Hulkamaniac at the very beginning. I was obviously a fan of Steamboat not only because of his skills but his ethnicity (I recently found out his mother is from Kyoto). I became a Jake Roberts fan afterwards. I'm pretty sure I started watching the WWF some time after the first WrestleMania, maybe even near WrestleMania II, because on TV, I saw Bundy hurting Hogan and Roddy Piper being scared to face Mr. T. Then came Ricky Steamboat vs Randy Savage at WrestleMania III. I began hating Savage (in a good way - for wrestling) after he cheated to win the Intercontinental Belt against Tito Santana, but that ring bell on Steamboat's throat was scaring me at the time. That match was great. Hogan-Andre at WrestleMania III never seemed special to me, I thought it happened out of the blue and I was wanting to see Hogan beat Paul Orndorff (Yes I watched that cage match at Saturday Night's Main Event). NWA-WCW I only saw on videotape, but I still remember Ric Flair flying in a helicopter to an outdoor arena facing someone (internet search:Nikita Koloff the very first NWA Great American Bash, 1985) and being in awe. I also remember Magnum T.A. throwing a big dude (internet search:Kamala) off of the top rope with a belly-to-belly suplex (that was INSANE in those days). An internet search reveals that the main event of that show was Dusty Rhodes vs Tully Blanchard in a steel cage, but I have no momory of it. Anyway, after WreslteMania VI and the Warrior win I only watched sparringly, although I remember Bret Hart vs Curt Henning and Bret vs Davey Boy Smith at SummerSlam in the early 90s, and Ric Flair in the WWF. After WMX I stopped watching because Yokozuna was insulting my heritage, and I basically missed Shawn Michaels' reign. I got back into it when Bret Hart had left after losing at WMXII and Steve Austin was calling him out, now adopting his Stone Cold gimmick. This would be the summer of 1996. I've been watching ever since. WCW was not on that often before the Monday night wars, and I only caught everything from the summer of 1996. Before that, the only thing I remember from live TV is Sting and the Black Scorpion which I caught by accident somewhere, perhaps when I was over at a friend's house who had all the cable channels, or when our family was on vacation in a hotel somewhere in the US. I only watched two ECW shows, both in 1999, and i was unlucky because I was turned off by a plunder match that had no rules. I remember RVD, but even he couldn't help me get past the fact that this didn't seem to be a match. Which is unfortunate, because I would have loved to have caught it when Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit were there. Anyway, I'm still watching after all the crappy stuff. ROH and TNA are my more recent favourites, in that order.

First off, here is the Rumble order of entry and elimination.
in1 HHH, in2 Rey Mysterio, in3 Simon Dean, out1 Simon Dean (Rey and HHH), in4 Psicosis, out2 Psicosis (Rey), in5 Ric Flair, out3 Ric Flair (HHH), in6 Big Show, in7 Coach, out4 Coach (Big Show), in8 Bobby Lashley, in9 Kane, in10 Sylvain, out 5 Sylvain (Lashley), out 6 Lashley (Kane & Big Show), out 7 & 8 (HHH), in11 Carlito, in12 Chris Benoit, in13 Booker T, out 9 Booker T (injury?), in14 Joey Mercury, in15 Tatanka, in16 Johnny Nitro, in17 Trevor Murdoch, in18 Eugene, in19 Animal, in20 Rob Van Dam (Huge POP!), out10 Animal (RVD), in21 Orlando Jordan, in22 Chavo Guerrero, out11 Chavo (HHH), in23 Matt Hardy, out12 Tatanka, in24 Super Crazy, in25 HBK, out13 Murdoch (HBK), in26 Chris Masters, in27 Viscera, out14 Matt Hardy (Viscera), in28 Shelton Benjamin, out15 Eugene (Benoit), in29 Goldust, out16 Super Crazy (Rey), in30 Randy Orton, out17 Benoit (Orton), out18 Vis (Carlito & Masters), out19 Masters (Carlito), out20 Goldust (RVD), out21 Orlando (Orton), out22 Mercury (HBK), out23 Nitro (HBK), out24 Shelton (HBK), out25 HBK (Shane? is that allowed?), out26 Carlito (RVD), out27 RVD (Rey flung by HHH), out28 HHH (Rey), out29 Orton (Rey)

So, how was the Rumble Match? Well, I was certainly affected by the real-time reaction of the crowd, and I enjoyed watching Rey Mysterio win the Rumble after a two-on-one with former Evolution members Randy Orton and HHH. All the while I was thinking, "It's two-on-one. C'mon, if Rey doesn't win now, this is a big letdown..." and at the same time thinking "But this is HHH we are talking about...". Therefore I was into the finish when it happened.

As a PPV, the first few matches were forgettable, the Main event matches weren't that exciting, and Taker thinks he's more important than Edge or Cena or Angle or Rey or the Rumble itself, for that matter. I was wondering for the longest time why they put the Rumble Match before the two title matches. I now understand why, it was all for the Undertaker segment and the ring collapsing. I guess it's good to set up stories for the next few weeks, but not at the expense of the emotional high of Rey Mysterio winning.

Now you have to find an opponent for Rey at WrestleMania 22. Rey vs Angle? There is no interaction between the two since Angle won the title. What concerns me a little bit is the fact that WWE played a segment from the 2001-2005 Rumbles, and how Austin, HHH, Brock, Benoit and Batista have all won the Rumble and then went on to win their WrestleMania Main events and win the title. I've watched enough WWE to assume that when they point something out, usually the opposite happens, and in this case it would indicate that Rey will not go on to win his match at WrestleMania. It is nice that many of the top matchs are notdefinite at this point, it will be interesting to see how things unfold. Previous Rumble results made it easy to predict who would win at WrestleMania (HHH@WM18, Brock@WM19, Benoit@WM20, Batista@WM21). This year we don't even know what the matches are going to be. And that is good too.

Notes:

I thought I was watching TNA for a second there with the Cruiserweight match... Ashley should not be in the ring. Man, what a waste of $250,000... Is the Boogyman so bad in the ring that he beats the longest reigning WWE champion in Smackdown history in 3 minutes?... Rey comes out with Eddie's low rider and T-shirt. I wanted that T-shirt a while back... Eugene sort of surprise, I hope he's better... Matt Hardy is dry humped by Vis. Somehow, I don't feel too sorry for Matt... Shane McMahon's dorky dane seems worse everytime I see it... Cool Cena entrance, that maybe should have been reserved for WrestleMania... Somehow, I'm not that upset with the Edge loss. I wasn't that behind Edge winning it the way he did, and I would have hoped he would have won it with some build-up. That said, I have no clue what he will do at WrestleMania... I don't like how Eddie's name pops up every three seconds, and they should pay his family everytime an angle is used in connection with Eddie... HHH had some nice comedy when drawing his number. I wonder what would happen if he played the cool heel or a babyface with lots of comedy. We sorta saw it with Eugene in 2004...
